It is the capital of the Golestan Province of Iran. It is about 400 km from Tehran.
It had an valued population of the 241,177 in 2005.Some 150km east of Gorgan is the Golestan National Park.
It has a moderate and humid climate which is called as "the moderate Caspian climate.
Alborz mountain range, direction of the mountains, height of the area, neighborhood to the sea, vegetation surface, local winds, altitude and weather fronts are some effective factors of climate.
Hyrcania is the earliest nmae in Greek record of the local name.It's Old Persian name is Varkâna. At the time of Sasanids Gorgan appeared as the name of a city, province capital, and a provinceHyrcania became part of the Persian empire during the reign of Cyrus the Great 559 to 530 BC the first emperor the first Persian empire dynasty or Cambyses 530 to 522 BC .
It was defeated by Arabs in 8th century.Mongols defeated this in 13th century.
