- He was a French artist, writer, diplomat, author, and archaeologist.
- In 1804 he was selected by Napoleon to the significant office of director-general of museums, which he filled until the restoration in 1815, when he had to retire.
- He had a dazzling career as artist and diplomat under the ancient régime and followed Napoleon on his campaign in Egypt.
- In 1804 he became director-general of museums and was instrumental in bringing foreign masterpieces into the Louvre as the spoils of invasion.
- His accounts of his travels and his article on ancient monuments contain collections of his engravings of works of art.
- He was partly responsible for the design of the Vendôme Column, a monument to Napoleon.
